TrailStar Maximus

The TrailStar Maximus pushes performance with every step. Designed for intense activity that requires speed and precision, the TrailStar Maximus functions as well in the gym as it does outdoors. These lightweight and secure sandals break the boundaries of what you expect from minimalist footwear.

Sole

The Maximus use an 8mm Vibram® Newflex sole coupled with your choice of UltraGrip or Tobacco Brown Goatskin Leather footbed for a 9mm total stack height. Vibram® Newflex is made from a blend of rubber and EVA to form a durable soling material with aggressive tread. At 3mm thicker than the Warrior sole, you will get a much more rugged sandal that is capable of diffusing the feeling of rocks, sticks, and the like from underfoot. The Maximus sole is suitable for a host of situations from the trail to the gym. Pair with the UltraGrip footbed for use in the harshest elements, or select the Goatskin Leather for more comfort in drier conditions.

TrailStar Lacing System

Increased security from over-the-foot style lacing is the hallmark of TrailStars. The TrailStar Lacing system features a specially made forefoot strap made from Toray® Ultrasuede and a nylon mesh. The result is an extremely comfortable material with the strength properties of webbing. The forefoot strap is completely adjustable and anchored through the bottom of the sole. Final adjustments are made through a tension lock on the outer heel post. All forefoot straps are cut-to-fit after adjustment. The heel section of the lacing system employs two heel posts covered in Ultrasuede for comfort. Heel strap adjustments are locked into place using Velcro®. The result is an extremely comfortable and secure lacing system that is ready for adventure!

My new favorite running "shoe"!!

Overall the fit and feel is almost as good as being barefoot! I love my trail runs and hikes. It really creates a different connection and experience when you're running.

I have bunions and Would buy again!

Don't make the mistake I made and print the size chart for accurate sizing. I bought the size based off of my other barefoot shoes and these run bigger. I cut the laces before I realized that they weren't the perfect fit. I was too excited! Otherwise, very comfy and versatile! These are my first pair of barefoot running sandals and I'm very glad I got them!

Wonderful Sandal!

These are better than expected! It took a bit to adjust how long I wanted the straps, but once set, I love them and they even dress up nicely!

TrailStars vs Cruzers

After buying a pair of Cruzers I ordered a pair of TrailStars. I got both of these in the Leather Maximus variant. The difference between these is in the lacing, both models have the same sole and footbed. I really like the Maximus, it's thick enough to not be floppy, but thin enough to give decent ground feel. While the Cruzers lacing is light weight and instantly comfortable, the lacing on the TrailStars does take a bit of adjustment to fit perfectly. It's also tighter on the foot, which is a mixed bag. While you can almost forget that the you are wearing the Crusers, the TrailStars are always there. However, you do feel more surefooted in the TrailStars, and they are a more 'dressy' option. I wear the Cruzers while riding my bicycle, or at the beach, the Trailstars are more at home when eating out, or going somewhere more 'formal'.

Great sandal

Love this sandal. It hugs close to my foot and is so bendable. My feet feel great and it provides just enough barrier from urban environment.
Great customer service. Helped me adjust between sizes. thank you

great sandals, one suggestion

I got this August 2023, and have gotten tons of wear out of them (the velcro front strap version, ultragrip, short straps, as i have low volume feet, and size 6.5, and these are the perfect length for me. i never have to worry about my toes coming off if im on the ball of my foot, but not so long that i trip. I’m usually an 8 or 39 ish in other brands). I looked up sizing and reviews in barefoot groups I was in, and that was super helpful. I was looking for a minimal sandal that had substantial lacing, like my chacos, that were way too much shoe after i switched to barefoot/minimal shoes. I have recommended this brand, and a this style in particular, to many people. I wear them on day hikes, and in the city.

my one small request (which is probably not a quick thing) would be to make scaled strap-width options for the smaller shoes. like what if the width of the strap on a size 6 sandal was 70% the width of a size 14 sandal (making up the numbers) but yea i have a smaller foot, so i would personally love a slightly more minimal strap, both for aesthetics, and bc i think it would still be functional, just more minimal. idk. like petite clothes patterns are often tweaked in subtle ways. upon taking photos for this review right now, i noticed that a plastic bit is missing. did not affect wear at all, and hadn’t noticed otherwise.

Comfortable and secure fit

I was a Chacos toe loop sandals wearer before I got into barefoot shoes and realized how heavy they are. About a year ago, I was thrilled to see that Shamma offered a toe loop strap sandal, and I tried on a pair of TrailStars Maximus. I knew right away that I loved the comfort of the laces and the sole was a good thickness but impressively flexible and still lightweight. The strap wasn't long enough (this is before the new buckle model without velcro on top), and there was pain at my mid-foot when I walked in them. I reached out to Customer Service about a possible custom sole and they said it was possible, but encouraged me to try the longer laces first. I returned them but then a year later, I went ahead with a custom sole. They fit perfectly- I gave myself more mid-foot room and the top is shaped so that there is just the right amount of space around all of my toes. I love the way they feel secure on my foot- my walking feels more natural than when I wear EarthRunners. I just wore them backpacking and they were comfortable, did fine in water (swimming), and was able to adjust them easily.

Simply amazing!

These shoes are wonderful. You can customize the tightness on each part of your foot perfectly. The straps don’t rub and the sandals are quick to get on and off. The sole material feels broken in as soon as you put them on, giving you cushion but also excellent ground feel. Shamma is my new favorite brand in the land of minimalistic sandals!
